  5. A superb Carnegie show, not as historic as , but better recorded, and a fine variety of suites (Perfume and Brown, Black and Beige) and shorter tunes. A rare recording for tenor man Al Sears. The whole band of '44 got very few opportunities to record, and here they are looser than at the famous Carnegie date/5(2).

  7. This Carnegie Hall concert (available on two CDs) introduced Ellington's "Perfume Suite," and includes a half-hour series of selections from "Black, Brown and Beige," but also in the shorter pieces shows the impact of tenorman Al Sears and high-note wizard Cat Anderson on the band's sound, making it a more potentially boisterous and extroverted.
